It always pays to now what you should look out for when you use your credit card online. Accepting credit cards is important if you are running an internet business. If you have a very small site, this can be a problem, because many people are wary of using credit cards on sites that are not secure. When you accept credit cards online, you have to make sure your site is secure, and that potential customers feel safe when considering a purchase through your site.

The simplest way to check that a site is secure for a credit card transaction is by looking at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where you will see a small [verisign] logo. Of course there is no guarantee that any system is completely secure, it does make you feel a little easier about giving out your personal details. If potential customers get the impression you are doing everything to make their purchase secure then they are more likely to buy from you.

There is something else you should keep in mind when shopping on the internet. Not every site that will accept you credit card is safe. You can look for the Verisign logo, but there is something else you should look for as well. Normal web addresses start with http:// but when you are on a secure site or the ordering page of a secure site the address should start with https://.

It is now a fact that some sites are set up as decoys and can trick the unsuspecting user into giving their credit card information. Phishing sites as they are now called trick more people than you think. These ‘phishing’ scams often start with an official looking email from your Credit Card Company or bank requesting you follow a link to update or confirm your personal information. So when you follow the link it takes the user to what appears to be an official looking site but is a complete fake. Once you enter your credit card or bank information, criminals can access your account at any time.

To avoid problems with phishing sites, and sites that you are unsure of, make sure you type the Internet address in yourself. To do this, close the existing browser window you are in and start a new one, entering the internet address in yourself. As a rule of thumb, just remember that financial institutions almost never ask for private information via an email. Contacting you by telephone is the normal procedure if there is a problem. If you are still wary, look on the official website for a contact number. All companies that are legitimate and offer credit card facilities will understand if you are hesitant and will help you with any issues you may have.
