When using credit cards online, it is always useful to know a few of the basics. Credit cards are usually accepted by most internet businesses. However, many businesses that only have small sites find the problem is that people won’t buy from them if the site isn’t secure. Potential customers are more likely to order from you if your site is secure.

On some sites you visit, you may have seen a small logo called [verisign], this means that the site is secure and you can use your credit card safely. There are no guarantees given but does give you a sense of relief when you use personal information online. If potential customers get the impression you are doing everything to make their purchase secure then they are more likely to buy from you.

If you shop online, don’t forget this. Using you credit card online is not safe on every site that may accept it. It is quick and easy to see the verisign logo and it’s a good start but there is another thing you should be aware of and look for. Always remember to look for the ’s’ in the web address, i.e. https:// and not http://, as the ’s’ means it is a secure site.

However, there are a number of sites to be wary of because their sole intention is to get your credit card information. These are often referred to as phishing sites, you may be surprised at the number of people who fall for this. These ‘phishing’ scams often start with an official looking email from your Credit Card Company or bank requesting you follow a link to update or confirm your personal information. If you follow the link you will be transferred to a very real looking but also very false web site. The criminals behind this scam will have immediate access to your account as soon as your details are entered.

If you enter the internet address in manually you can get around this problem with ‘phishing’ sites. So, as a get around, start up a new browser window and enter the web address in manually as you remember it. You can be safe in the knowledge that you will almost never be requested to confirm confidential information from an email. The first point of contact is usually a phone call. Look on the company’s real website for a phone number to make sure. Any site that is legitimate, and can accept credit cards online will understand your hesitation and will be happy to answer any questions you may have for them.
