Discover Credit Card Merchant Services

It always pays to now what you should look out for when you use your credit card online. Credit cards are usually accepted by most internet businesses. Problems occur for small companies that do not have a secure site because people have become very wary about using them. So to make sure people feel safe ordering from you and using their credit cards, your site must be secure.

The simplest way to check that a site is secure for a credit card transaction is by looking at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where you will see a small [verisign] logo. Of course there is no guarantee that any system is completely secure, it does make you feel a little easier about giving out your personal details. This reassurance can be the difference of a potential customer buying from you or not at all.

If you are a regular internet shopper, there is something you should not forget. Not every site that will accept you credit card is safe. The verisign logo helps and it is a good place to start but it is not the only thing you should look for. All web addresses start with http://, but when you are on a secure site, it should instead be: https://. The ’s’ means that the site you are on is secure.

Credit card users should be careful though because there are some web sites that accept credit cards that have the sole intention of collecting you card details. This new type of site is called a phishing site and many people fall foul of them. It usually begins with an email telling you that your information must be updated, and then offers you a link. So when you follow the link it takes the user to what appears to be an official looking site but is a complete fake. The moment you enter your information, criminals have access to your accounts.

The easiest way around this type of scam is to enter the website address in manually. Open up a new browser and then enter the internet address in manually. As a rule of thumb, just remember that financial institutions almost never ask for private information via an email. The first point of contact is usually a phone call. It’s easy to check the website for a telephone number if you’re not sure. A site that handles credit card transactions and is legitimate will always be happy to answer questions if you are unsure about ordering.
