This new type of website fools more people than you would believe, they even have a new name for them, ‘phishing’ sites. They often start with an official looking email informing you that you need to update your details by following a link. Once the link has bee clicked, the site it take the user to is exactly what that user is expecting to see but is indeed a fake. Once you enter your credit card or bank information, criminals can access your account at any time.
If you are unsure of the site, don’t follow the link directly but enter the internet address in yourself manually. Open up a new browser and then enter the internet address in manually. Having said all that, you will almost never be asked to divulge confidential information by email. Initial contact is normally by phone if there is a problem. Look on the company’s real website for a phone number to make sure. A legitimate site will completely understand your hesitancy to divulge credit card details and answer any questions.
