There are a number of facts you should be made aware of before you use your credit card online. If you have a business on the Internet, you have to be able to accept credit cards online. Problems occur for small companies that do not have a secure site because people have become very wary about using them. Ensuring you have a secure site is the easiest way to guarantee visitors will give you their credit card details and order from you.
The simplest way to check that a site is secure for a credit card transaction is by looking at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where you will see a small [verisign] logo. Nothing is ever completely secure but it does give you a sense of relief when you give your details online. It is essential that customers get that good feeling when they decide to buy from you, or they may not buy from you at all.
If you are a regular internet shopper, there is something you should not forget. When shopping online, some sites are safer than others when using credit cards. It is important to remember that there is something else you should watch for, not just the verisign logo. Always look for a web address that starts with https:// an not http://, if you see the ’s’ in the address it means it’s secure.

It is now a fact that some sites are set up as decoys and can trick the unsuspecting user into giving their credit card information. This new type of website fools more people than you would believe, they even have a new name for them, ‘phishing’ sites. It usually begins with an email telling you that your information must be updated, and then offers you a link. Clicking on the link takes the user to a website that looks exactly like the real thing but is a cleverly designed imitation. Access to you bank or credit card company are easy once you have entered your information on the site.
Phishing sites can only cause a problem if you follow the indicated link, so if you are unsure, just enter the web site address in yourself. Open a new browser, and type the address in as you know it. Remember that almost no one will ask you to verify any information via email. If there is a problem, they will call you. If you are still wary, look on the official website for a contact number. If you are unsure about using your credit cards online with a company, contact them, if they’re a bona fide company they will be more than happy to put your mind at rest.
