You can look for the Verisign logo, but there is something else you should look for as well. A secure web site has the address https:// and not the usual http:// when you look at the address bar in your browser.

Phishing sites as they are now called trick more people than you think. You should be wary of emails that require you to follow a link to update your credit card or bank details. Clicking on the link takes the user to a website that looks exactly like the real thing but is a cleverly designed imitation. The criminals behind this scam will have immediate access to your account as soon as your details are entered.

These sites rely on you following a link, by entering the web address in yourself manually; you can get around the problem. Open a new browser, and type the address in as you know it. Financial companies do not use emails to verify personal information. If there is a problem, they will call you. It’s easy to check the website for a telephone number if you’re not sure. All companies that are legitimate and offer credit card facilities will understand if you are hesitant and will help you with any issues you may have.
